Tonight's 'Supermoon' over Tokyo
Tonight there is a 'Supermoon' over Tokyo and the rest of the world. A supermoon is a fluke of orbital mechanics that will bring the moon close to the Earth than it has been in 18 years orbiting at 221,567 miles from Earth vs. the average distance of 238,000 miles. This happens exactly at 2PM CDT at which time the moon was full only 50 minutes earlier. The relative nearness of the moon makes it appear 14% larger and 30%brighter than other full moons. Future dates include: Nov 14, 2016, Jan 2, 2018, Jan 21, 2023, Nov 25, 2034, and Jan 13, 2036. Grab a cup of coffee, tea or wine and the hand of someone you love and head outside tonight and watch the "biggest moon of 2011." It is truly beautiful to see.
